Its functionality is to use the ability on a target using the mouse cursor. That is, in this case, the spell “Word of Darkness: Pain” will be used on the target that the mouse is simply hovering over and not selected. In large battles, you will only need to move the mouse over the opponents and press the macro. Saves a lot of time and nerves.

Combinations

Want to use two abilities with one macro click at the same time? This is... impossible in most cases. Almost all spells, after using them, even if they do not have their own cooldown, i.e. These are instant abilities that trigger GCD—the cooldown for all abilities. Using macros, you can combine up to 24 abilities within 1-6 buttons.
  • Macros allow you to combine multiple abilities under one button so that pressing it will activate them all at once, saving time. True, provided that only one of the spells in the macro has a casting time, or is instantaneous, but causes a global cooldown.
  • Using macros you can also do unusual things. For example, counting your voidance (if you are a tank), or looking for the Time-Lost Proto-Dragon while flying through the Storm Peaks

Using the "/use" command instead of "/cast" allows us to save an entire character, which is especially important in large macros that are close in size to the maximum limit of 255 characters.

The macro works exactly the same as the Shadow Bolt spell from your spellbook. Drag this macro onto the panel and see for yourself (if you are a warlock, of course). Of course, Shadowbolt can be replaced by any spell or ability from your arsenal. Since this macro provides absolutely no advantage over a regular spell from the book, there is no point in creating it. I brought it to demonstrate the simplest example.


Now let's move on to more useful things, expanding our useless blank into something functional. Let's add 4 modifiers to this macro. IN general view such a macro looks like:

If you CTRL-click on this macro, two things will happen: #showtooltip will change the red question mark of the macro icon to the ability icon4 and the ability4 will trigger. Likewise with the ALT and SHIFT modifiers. If no modifier key is pressed, the macro will receive the ability1 icon and ability1 will trigger. If you made a mistake when writing the name of the ability, or it simply is not in the spell book, a red “?” will again appear in place of the macro icon, notifying the player that there is an error in the macro.

Thus, by writing 6 such macros you will immediately have access to 24 spells from your book at the cost of only 6 cells on the panel. You don’t have to place these macros on the panel at all by assigning hotkeys to them through the appropriate addon, for example through BindPad. It is convenient to select the hotkeys themselves next to the movement buttons - WASD or ESDF.

Along with rarely used and/or non-combat abilities, it is best to use hard-to-reach modifiers (for example, I find CTRL the most inconvenient). Therefore, I have the Bronze Dragon assigned to CTRL+macro. All other abilities should also be placed in order of increasing importance and convenience, but the most important ones should be left without modifiers, as was done in this case with the Dark Arrow.


You can make a macro that will cast several abilities at once with the press of one button. In this case, two conditions must be met. First, only one of these spells can have a casting time. Secondly, only one of the spells can cause a global cooldown. In other words, if a spell in a macro causes a global cooldown, then all subsequent commands to cast the spell will not work.

Here is an example from life. Warlocks have an emergency button in case his minion is killed. Typically, resummoning takes as long as 10 seconds, which is prohibitively long, especially in PvP conditions. Thanks to the Fel Dominance talent in combination with other passive talents, the summoning time is reduced to 0.5 seconds.

Here's a generally great macro that allows you to click Fel Dominance and summon a minion with one button in one click.

This example works because the spells Blood Fury and Fel Domination are instant and do not cause a global cooldown, which means they can be used simultaneously after each other. The Summon Felguard spell has a casting time, so it must be at the end of the macro, since after the spell is cast, all other lines of the macro will be ignored.

Another simple, but very useful macro for a damage dealer (assist). It forces the damage dealer to switch to the target that the main tank is hitting.

The second line selects the target of the main tank as the target. The macro is very useful and allows the damage dealer to always hit exactly the target he needs without fear of disrupting aggro. As you can see, adding the modifier before Fel Ascendancy in the first line played a key role here. This tells the game that Fel Dominance should only be used when there are no modifiers. This is exactly what was mentioned at the beginning of the article.

However, there is still an aesthetic problem. The fact is that the #showtooltip command will always display the icon for the Fel Domination spell, regardless of which additional key this macro is pressed with. The solution is very simple and by analogy with the last line:

Multiple actions in one click

In general, you cannot cast more than one spell with a macro click. Most spells and some items have a global cooldown (GCD), which prevents you from performing too many actions at once. Some spells can be cast with just one button press. Any instant or non-GCD spell can be followed by another. The tooltip on a spell will tell you whether it's instant or not, but to find out if it has a GCD, you'll need to use special sites like WowHead. An example of such a macro is the following:

Target selection

Target selection is another common macro task. Using regular macros, you cast spells on your current target. Combining the /cast and /target commands makes it possible to change the target when clicking on the macro.

The simplest macro looks like this:

/target Vasya

/target looks for matches between the letters you wrote and the targets around you. This means that if you used the command /target you and a target with that name is nearby, then you will select it. Depending on the situation, this can be a plus or a minus. Unfortunately, this macro will also target unnecessary units (for example, corpses).

Let's combine two commands - /cast and /target:

/target Blackwing Mage /cast Scourge of Agony

If there is no Blackwing Mage nearby, then you will target someone with a name that begins with M or Ma. If this is a friendly target, then the macro loses its meaning altogether. Another problem is that you may be targeting someone 100 yards away who you don't want in the first place. Therefore, in patch 2.3, the /targetexact command was introduced to fix this problem.

In addition to all of the above, you can use the unit ID instead of the name of the desired target. Unit ID is a way to identify a specific character, mob, NPC. For example, your current target can be selected using the "target" unit ID. Your character can be selected using the "player" ID, and your pet can be selected using the "pet". You can add "target" after any valid unit ID to select the target of that unit. List of unit IDs:

  • "arenaN" - Member of the enemy arena team. N = 1,2,3,4 or 5.
  • "bossN" - The active boss of the current encounter, if available. N = 1,2,3 or 4.
  • "focus" - The player's current focus.
  • "mouseover" - The unit that is (or has recently been) under the mouse pointer.
  • "none" - no unit. Often used to prevent the macro from auto-casting on itself (/cast Healing Wave).
  • “partyN” is the Nth member of the group, excluding your character. N = 1, 2, 3 or 4.
  • “partypetN” is the pet of the Nth group member. N = 1, 2, 3 or 4.
  • "pet" is the player's current pet.
  • “player” is the player himself.
  • "raidN" - raid member. N = 1, 2, 3,…, 25.
  • “raidpetN” - pet of the Nth raid member. N = 1, 2, 3,…, 25.
  • “target” - the player’s current goal
  • "vehicle" is the player's current vehicle.

Other commands for selecting a target

/assist

By itself, this command selects the goal of the target. For example, if you target me and I target Yriel, /assist will force you to target Yriel.

/cleartarget

Leaves you without purpose.

/targetexact

Targets a unit with the exact name specified. If the name is spelled incorrectly or the unit is far away from you, then your target will not change.

/targetlasttarget, /targetlastfriend, /targetlastenemy

The first command will highlight your previous target. The second is the previous friendly target, and the third is the previous hostile one. If you didn’t have a goal before, the team won’t do anything.

/targetenemy, /targetfriend

These commands go through targets of a certain type one by one. /targetenemy is the same as pressing TAB, and /targetfriend is CTRL–TAB. You can also add a "1" parameter to cycle through targets in reverse order (/targetenemy 1 works like pressing SHIFT–TAB).

Note: You can only use these commands once per macro.

These teams take turns targeting a specific type of player character. They work exactly the same as /targetfriend and /targetenemy except that they only target players, while ignoring anyone controlled by the computer (NPCs, mobs, pets, minions). Useful macro in PvP. Pet management

Other slash commands

We've covered the basics, and now I want to introduce other slash commands. Some of these may seem useless at first, but when combined with the macro options from section 2, they can be great things.

Dressing items

There are three commands for equipping an item: /equip, /equipslot and /equipset. /equip takes the name of the item and moves it to a standard slot, just like you would click on the item right click mice. /equipslot uses the inventory slot ID and item name, thereby moving the item to the specified slot.

To equip a weapon in a standard slot:

Sequence of spells and items

There are often cases where you use the same sequence of spells often (for example, opening a rotation). To make your life easier, the /castsequence command was created. It uses a comma separated list of spells and items. Each time you use a macro, it will activate the current spell or item. If you successfully cast a spell, the macro moves on to the next one. That is, you must press the macro button sequentially to activate the spells one after another. As soon as the last spell has been cast, the macro jumps back to the beginning of the list. For example:

I hasten to note that if the Sacrificial Fire was not cast for some reason (lack of mana, out of range, silence), then the macro will remain at the same point.

Before the list of spells, you can define the conditions for resetting the sequence to start over. The basic syntax is as follows:

Where n is the number of seconds of inactivity before the macro will be reset. Macro options allow you to select a set of parameters depending on some criteria. At the highest level, you set up sets of criteria/parameters separated by semicolons. A semicolon is treated as "else" or "else if". A criterion consists of zero or more sets of conditions. Each set of conditions is enclosed in square brackets. Syntax illustration:

The team works from left to right. Once it finds a set of conditions that are true, the command is run with the appropriate parameters. If there are no conditions, then it is considered to be always true. Condition syntax

Each set of conditions is a regular comma-separated list. Conditions can be written in any order, but [@unit] always appears before all conditions. A comma is the same as “and”. The condition means "My focus is friendly and not dead."

Some conditions have their own set of parameters. Empty parameters and conditions

Empty conditions

Sometimes you will need to cast a spell on a specific target under certain conditions, but for that magic to work as normal if those conditions are not met. Some teams use units as parameters. For example, /target party1 will target the first member of your party. /target [@party1] has the same effect. However, in most cases we are not allowed to set conditions for one unit and act on another. The following macro will not work as intended:

Stance is a general term used for warriors, druids, rogues, priests, and shamans. Stances are only applicable when a certain ability can only be used in one of the stances/forms. Therefore, paladin and DK power auras, as well as hunter aspects, are not considered as stances.

    Switchable abilities

    The /cast command turns some spells on and off immediately. Examples of such spells are Stealth, Shot, Mass Dispel (green circle when casting). If you want to use a macro without immediately turning off these abilities, put an exclamation mark before the name of the spell.

    Focus is the unit ID, as is target, player, or raidpet1target. It allows you to contact the unit you have assigned at any time. The simplest use of focus is Keybinding. There are two hotkeys associated with focus - Remember Target and Restore Target. Remember target will assign the focus to whoever is your current target. Once you have assigned a focus, you can use it as a unit ID in other commands. Restore Target will select the memorized focus as your target.
